Enjoying the ride on an open-top bus tour

When in Los Angeles, do as the Angelenos do – get behind the wheel. But maybe let someone else take the wheel. On a recent family trip to the Golden State, I signed myself as well as my dad and sister up for a Los Angeles Hop-on Hop-off Double Decker Bus Tour. Since we were all L.A. newbies, we thought it would be a great way to get our bearings while catching the main sights.

Despite the city’s luring attractions, we decided to forgo opportunities to hop off and instead enjoy our premium seats on the roof. From here we had the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy the sights and sounds – plus a nice breeze to combat the urban heat. The pre-recorded narration was informative and gave a helpful explanation of all sites as they came into view. It’s worth noting that the tour is recorded in nine different languages, so even if you don’t speak English there’s a good chance you can still enjoy the details of the ride.

I have to admit I hate driving in L.A. The traffic can be dense and personally, I can never seem to find parking, which is all the more reason this tour was perfect for me. Lounging on the roof while letting our driver navigate allowed for a stress-free day of exploration. I’ve taken other bus tours in the past that have felt rushed, but I spoke to other guests who had spent the whole day exploring at their leisure. Should you choose to hop off and explore on your own, buses run every 20 to 40 minutes, leaving you plenty of time for picture taking, shopping or eating, after which you can literally hop on the next bus.

We purchased a 24-hour ticket, but if you want to spend more time exploring, 48- and 72-hour tickets are also available. Since L.A. is such a sprawling city, I recommend starting early in the day or purchasing a multi-day pass if you want to see as much as you can.

Five routes are available. We stayed on the Red Route, which brought us to sites like the Sunset Strip, Farmers Market and Grove. If we’d had more time, I would’ve liked to explore the others as well. One ticket gives you the chance to explore as many lines with as many rides and hop-on hop-offs as you like. I give this tour two thumbs up – since neither one has to be on the steering wheel.
